24 Hours in Auckland: Where To Eat, Stay & Shop In The City
Recently I ventured back to my beloved New Zealand for a whirlwind 24-hour trip to Auckland. Although I lived in Auckland for five years during my time at university, I still feel an urge of excitement whenever I head back to the city of sails. The city has a really cool vibe at the moment with an array of new restaurants, shops and new developments taking flight. Here’s my guide to the best of Auckland in 24-hours:
After arriving from Sydney, I ventured straight into the heart of Auckland to The Skycity Grand Hotel, known for its artistic and luxe aesthetic. This beautiful hotel is situated straight underneath the iconic Sky Tower and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to delicious restaurants and ‘it’ bars.
Cocktails and dinner
After exploring the city and the Skycity Grand I ventured to Mexico for a relaxed evening with a cool vibe. Menu wise, I highly recommend their ceviche and soft shell tacos accompanied by one of the ten different Frida’s Margaritas they serve. My favourite is the Mango and Red Chilli Margarita!
One word: Odette’s! This was a new discovery for me on my trip back to Auckland, and I have completely fallen in love with it. From the decor and the presentation, to the staff and the menu – everything about this hidden gem was perfect and delicious – not to mention extremely Instagram-worthy!
The North Shore of Auckland is definitely worth venturing to when you visit the city of sails. Not only will you see a view of Auckland’s iconic Harbour Bridge and Sky Tower from afar, but also you will discover shops and beaches along the way. The Department Store in Takapuna is your one stop shop for a mix of New Zealand’s best fashion brands and designers including Karen Walker, Georgia Alice, and Ruby, along with the ‘it’ hair & beauty salons Stephen Marr and Lucy and The Powder Room. I whiled away my morning here amidst beautiful clothing, fresh coffee and a touch of pampering!
I made the drive back into the city to the hustle and bustle that is Ponsonby Road. Prego is a long standing establishment in Ponsonby that is still my go to for a delicious lunch accompanied by a NZ sauvignon blanc in the sun.
A whirlwind trip wouldn’t be the same without a bit of spontaneous/ impulsive shopping! I made my way down Ponsonby Road and visited the beautiful fashion and homeware boutiques along the way. From Zamebsi, Lonely and Karen Walker, to The Shelter, Deadly Ponies and MECCA – the options are endless. If you’re in need of a 3pm coffee definitely wander through Ponsonby Central to Foxtrot Parlour. And if you’re in need of a little RandR make the drive to neighbouring suburb Herne Bay and enjoy your coffee on one of the hidden beaches.
