In our Insta-Snappable world, instantaneous fame is the dream. For most of us this universal recognition is a fantasy – a bit of fairy dust to sprinkle over the days when we can use a little boost. But for Ryan Ginns, that instant fame materialized after the graphic designer won Australia’s Big Brother in 2014. It was a surreal experience for Ginns, who had never given a second thought to reality TV – he was contacted by an agency to apply for the show and three weeks later he was preparing to enter the house. “I kind of freaked out thinking I wouldn’t last. Funny thing was, I lasted the longest.”
Big Brother was just the type of unplanned adventure suited to Ginns, who’s always up for something new. He’s the restless type, not content with the status quo even when the going is good. So while the glow from his BB fame was welcome, it wasn’t something Ginns expected – or wanted – to last. “It’s a tiny window of notoriety, and it’s mostly over now. I’m still the same old me, but it was definitely a crazy experience.”
Soon after his appearance on the show, he opened The House of Louis Tan, an Asian/South American fusion Tapas tapas bar in Sydney. The project was necessary for Ginns, who says that keeping busy with new projects and challenges keep his constantly spinning brain in order. “When I have too much time to think it’s not a good thing. A fast pace works to my advantage.”
While he might have a million things on his mind at any given time, his outward style is perfectly at ease. “I’m pretty simple. Monochrome, black and whites. I don’t love trends. The stuff you’ll see me wearing is stuff that’s been around forever.”
